BUGATTI : from Louis to Bugatti

For some, the youngest of us, CHIRON evokes the name of the last BUGATTI: this Supercar released at the end of 2016, sold at 500 copies at nearly 2.5M €, is equipped with a W16 engine (2 blocks V8 to 90 °) of 1,500 hp capable of propelling the machine at 420 km / h. Its weight / power ratio is 1.3 kg / hp and its torque to weight ratio is 802 Nm / T. The 0-100km / h is reached in just 2.5 seconds and last September the driver Juan Pablo Montoya broke the speed record from 0-400km / h in 41.96 seconds (beaten again a few hours ago by a Koenigsegg Agera S in 37.28 seconds!)

Louis Alexandre Chiron (1899-1979)

Pour d’autres, CHIRON évoque surtout Louis Alexandre Chiron (1899-1979), monégasque, un des plus glorieux pilote du 20ème siècle, connu pour son opportunisme et son audace en course (d’où son surnom « Le Vieux renard »). Il débuta sa carrière chez BUGATTI en 1926, fut l’un des organisateurs du 1er Grand Prix de F1 de Monaco en 1928, et pilota des TALBOT, ALFA, MASERATTI, FERRARI, puis MERCEDES en 1936 avec qui il eut un terrible accident au Grand Prix d'Allemagne ; s'en sortant sans trop de blessures, le Monégasque préféra alors mettre un terme à sa carrière.

Il était aussi connu pour son élégance, liée notamment à son fameux foulard à pois qu’il portait à chaque course. C’était donc aussi un Gentleman Driver qui marqua le sport automobile.
